I am currently living in Canada and have been an independent IT
Consultant for the past 7 years.
I got interested in computers in college when we had a subject on
computer circuits. Once I got interested, I figured that I wanted a
career in computers.
After getting a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, I
got a job with a consulting company in the Philippines. I worked there
as a systems programmer for mainframe systems. Part of my job was to
install the system and maintaining it. I liked my work because it
allowed me to explore the internals of the operating system and also to
write routines to extend the capabilities of the operating system.
When I got tired of the technical side, I decided to try my hands at
management. I headed the Data Centre Support unit for two years before
transferring to a quasi-technical and managerial role. This time, I was
looking at Unix and distributed processing.
The following years saw my family and I move to Jakarta, Indonesia then
to Vancouver BC in Canada, to Victoria BC in Beautiful Vancouver Island
then back to Jakarta then Manila then finally back home in Victoria.
On returning home my wife and I set up our own consulting company. For
two years, we served the Ministry of Finance and Corporate Relations of
the province of British Columbia. With the global economy, we turned our
site from the Island to the world. We are exploring opportunities on the
internet.
Our thrust towards the global economy made us focus on open source
systems like Linux, Perl, PostgreSQL and mySQL. This was what caused me
to write about Perl. Part of my contribution to the open source
community is my monthly articles at Suite101.com about Perl.
