The Author's Page of Lynne Williams

My life, from my birth in Brooklyn, New York in 1950, up until today, has always followed different paths. Over the years I have been a college psychology teacher, academic researcher and writer, political consultant, fundraiser, community organizer, bookkeeper, trainer, waitress, secretary, legal advocate, medical transcriptionist and, now, special education expert and travel writer.

Over the years I managed to receive a doctorate in social psychology and a J.D. in law and somewhere along the way I learned to write at least well enough to interest people in reading my work. I currently work as a special education Hearing Officer and mediator in Maine, an area of work that I love because it truly involves helping families address issues that are impacting the children in those families. My own son is hearing impaired and has experienced significant medical crises, so I bring a personal, as well as professional, perspective to this area of my work. I am also a published writer in this area, and my most recent article discussed the delivery of special education services to incarcerated youth.

Now I have finally gotten to the point professionally where I can take the time to indulge my one true passion - travel, particularly train travel. As a child and young adult, I traveled extensively between New England and New York City and within New York State. However, my first "real" train trip was in 1976, when I traveled by sleeper between Los Angeles and New Orleans. This trip truly opened my eyes to the possibilities of train travel and I have never looked back.

I have not kept count of the number of miles I traveled by train over the years, but it is certainly many hundreds of thousands. A couple of years ago I began writing about train travel with the hope that more Americans would realize how enjoyable a train trip could be. Train travel is about the journey rather than the destination, and for those lucky travelers who really value travel, rather than just their arrival at a place that is different from home, the possibilities are endless. In many ways, taking an extended train trip is a leap of faith, and I would like to assist travelers to feel confident making that leap.

In addition to train travel, I am a sailor and a former liveaboard. My hope is to eventually fuse my love of trains with my love of small cruising sailboats and produce guides that will assist sailors in their travel while ashore.

I currently live with my son in Rockland, Maine and write two monthly online columns, one about North American Train Travel on www.suite101.com and the other about travel in Maine on www.bootsnall.com
