I was born and grew up in Kent, England. Subsequently I've spent a lot of time travelling. I've enjoyed the opportunity of living and working in many parts of the UK: St Andrews, Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland, and Manchester, Newcastle and Brighton in England. In turn I've been lecturer, senior lecture and principal lecturer at the Universities of Strathclyde, Manchester Metropolitan and Northumbria.

A mediaeval linguist by speciality, I've a keen interest in the North Atlantic region in the Middle Ages. I've researched at the University of Iceland, supported by the British Academy, and I've travelled to Greenland and the Faroe Islands in search of Viking heritage. The photo here was taken on the Greenland Ice Cap, the Arctic's biggest expanse of ice.

Developmental work within Universities has taken me in other directions. Through the European Union's TEMPUS scheme I've worked in Russia, at Udmurt State and Novosibirsk State Universities, and at the University of West Bohemia, Czech Republic, while the British Council has taken me to Wroclaw, Poland. I've worked in Cairo with the Egyptian Ministry of Health, and recruited students in many locations in China. I'm now working on a project with the University of Basrah, Iraq - this one from England through the wonders of modern technology rather, not on site.

Genealogy has been a hobby for many years. Research is fun, whether talking with relatives, using archives, or through the almost unbelievable volume of material now available on the internet. Perhaps for me it's an antidote to travelling. Family tree in the end provides roots, a sense of belonging, a sense of cultural heritage. Enjoy your own research!
